Well my house is half packed and I'm not moving...

The people from the new complex called today and apparently they are having problems getting the current residents to move out. They don't think our place will by ready until July 8th! Keep in mind, we put a holding deposit on this place OVER a month ago. They have no other 3 bedrooms left and can only offer us a 2 bedroom. Not gonna happen. Luckily for us, we have this place til the 30th of this month so we only have to see if we can stay the extra 8 days.

Anyone had anything like this happen? What did you do?

My family thinks we should get something out of this. I mean yes we are being put out because we can't move in but it's not like we don't have a place to live. It's technically their mistake but other than evicting the current residents I'm not sure they could do anything anyway. What do you think?

i havent had anything happen like that, but the only thing i could think of, is that you have the landlord credit you the 8 days. So if you were to figure day to day rent, then just have him/her take the 8 days off of your next months rent. Sounds reasonable enough. Its only fair

Jun. 6, 2007 at 12:41 PM It's the other place I'm really concerned about not this one. I mean they promised us we could move in on June 8th and now it's going to be July 8th. Is there anything I can do about that?

Jun. 6, 2007 at 6:16 PM Man, thats a bummer. I hate when stuff gets held back like that. Unfortunately I don't know what you could do. They should take a months rent off the new place or something. Sorry to hear that.

Jun. 6, 2007 at 6:56 PM unfortunately there isnt much you can do at all. you are pretty much at the mercy of the current tenants. and you dont want to start off on the wrong foot with the owners by depanding compensation. i do think its entirely appropriate to let them know what an inconvience this is for you. let them know that you will need to know in advance if somethign else comes up so you can "perhaps look into other living arrangements other than this complex." whether or not you mean this, it will suggest to the owners that you arent messin around anymore!!! maybe then they will put a little more effort into getting the current tenants out!! good luck!!

Thanks everyone! I'm with you Tayrn. I really don't want to demand any compensation from them because while it's something that should have been taken care of it's not really their fault they didn't move out when they said they would.

UPDATE: They called me (finally) today. The apartment has been vacated but needs to be cleaned and stuff. So I think we can move in the the 15th if that works for all of us. There isn't one yet but I feel another problem coming on.

Jun. 10, 2007 at 10:58 PM I think you take the total amount of rent for one month divided by 30 (days in a month) and times that by 8 (the 8 days of inconvenience) minus this amount from your total rent next month and only pay that amount for your next rent and if they get mad say thats all im paying for the inconvenience you made me go through
