Well, my mom's yard is infested with mosquitos because she lives basically in the woods, so earlier this week Kayleb got a bunch of mosquito bites.  I don't think he's ever gotten any bites before and they look HORRIBLE, so I was wondering (since I'm sure most of you have plenty of baby mosquito bite experience) if this is just what mosquito bites look like on babies...?  I'm getting kind of worried about them because they get a lot worse looking before they get better.

Jun. 10, 2007 at 9:53 PM He probably has a slight allergic reaction to them.  I get that also and have my entire life.  They swell up more on me than anyone else and they get that red ring around them.  On me it has never been anything serious.  The same thing goes for bee stings.  I swell up like a balloon in the area that I was stung.  (no breathing problems, though)  You may want to check with your pediatrician and make sure that it is just a SLIGHT allergic reaction, you can never be too safe.

Jun. 10, 2007 at 9:55 PM My daughter's looked kinda like that too! Hers were completely swollen though. It may be an allergy to the bug. I would do what strega269 suggested and if they don't get better in a couple days ask your pediatrician. Maybe just call a nurse in the office and ask if the doctor wants to see him. Good luck!!

Jun. 10, 2007 at 9:59 PM I say it is an allergic reacition. Well I know my oldest has swelled really bad from mosquito bites and they even oozed a bit. They were like that for two to three weeks. His doc said it was a reaction to the mosquito bite. So know that he is older (five) they seem to be better. My cousins kid swells really bad still. If they don't get better in a few days I would call the doc. One of my sons got infected pretty bad! I know they are so ugly. Wish I had better news!

Jun. 10, 2007 at 10:10 PM when my daughter and son get bit the area itself swells and gets as big as a half dollar...doc said it was normal.  I usually put Aveeno anti-itch cream of the area and normally it goes away in a couple of days to a week....good luck!

If you are like most people with sensitive skin, you may find that you have a mosquito bite allergy. A mosquito bite allergy will appear as a very red swollen and itchy bump or bumps where mosquitoes have bitten. The allergic reaction is a reaction to the digestive enzymes and anti-coagulants that the female mosquito injects before sucking blood from your body.

For the most part, children and adolescents are more likely to have a mosquito bite allergy than adults who have become immune to the mosquito’s saliva. Sometimes if you have gone long period of time without being bitten, you will suffer an allergic reaction the first time you are bit again. Also, the first bite might not affect you, but if you are repeatedly bit, the subsequent bites will begin to show an allergic reaction.

If you are one of the many who suffer from a mosquito bite allergy, there are a few preventative things you can do to avoid being bitten, such as using repellent or netting, or wearing long pants and long sleeved shirts that cover your arms and neck area. If you have already been bitten, topical anti-itch creams and lotions can help soothe the itching, and aspirin and cold compresses may cool the area.
