NEED ADVICE!!!

I am having an amnio done next week and I am scared to death what do they do? Does it really hurt? can it hurt the baby? I will be 36 weeks on Sunday so when I have it done I will be further but aren't there still risks? They want to make sure my son's lungs are mature enough for delivery by c-section since he is having alot of problems and so am I with this pregnacy.  Someone please help me. I am very scared. Thank you.

Jun. 28, 2007 at 9:11 AM I never had one, so I couldn't tell you. I'm sure it won't be comfortable, but I would talk with the doctor and make sure all your questions are answered thoroughly before it is done. Good Luck!

Jun. 28, 2007 at 12:30 PM I've never had one done either but heard it's not really painful just weird and a little uncomfortable for a short time.  I think someone once described it as the dr. told her she would feel like a pinch (like getting a shot) and then a little cramp for a second and that was it.   I don't think there are any risks to the baby since you are pretty far along and you are going to deliver soon anyway.  Like you said all I think they are checking for is to look at his lungs as far as it sounds from talking to you in the past to make sure they are mature enough for birthing day.

I HAD ONE WHEN I WAS PREGNANT WITH MY TWINS, IT WAS FOR THE SAME REASON...THE SCARIEST PART FOR ME WAS THE NEEDLE, I HATE THEM, AND IT'S HUGE AND SCARY, THE PAIN IS SLIGHT, THEY NUMBTHE AREA, IT IS MORE UNCOMFORTABLE THAN ANYTHING..AS WITH ANY PROCEDURE THERE ARE RISK, BUT THEY ARE NOT HIGH. THE BABY WILL BE JUST FINE, AND YOU CAN DO MORE RESERACH ON GOOGLE IF YOU'D LIKE, THERE IS A GREAT PAGE THAT TELLS YOU ABOUT THE WHOLE PROCESS. I WAS VERY SCARED AS WELL, BUT IT WENT SMOOTHLY AND WAS OVER FASTER THAN I THOUGHT!! I WILL KEEP YOU IN MY PRAYERS THAT THE FEAR WILL SUBSIDE, YOU'LL DO JUST FINE!!!
