The internet, she is a wonderful place. Full of friends, support, information. But it's terrible if you're a spelling geek. I'm not talking about the occasional typo, of which I am as guilty as the next person. I'm talking about the frequent misspelling of words that native speakers of English should know. I don't wish to offend anyone, but if you are a lousy or careless speller, this post may offend you. Gentle reader, look elsewhere; please do not comment on my persnickety nature or general bitchiness, for this is MY tiny outpost in the cyberwilderness, and here I assert my right to express myself. Likewise, I will refrain from snarking about your spelling and punctuation on your blog, journal, website, whatever.

You have been warned.

Lesson number one: "To" is a preposition. It does not mean "also." If you wish to indicate "also," the word you are looking for is "too." For example: "I prefer tequila, but I like beer, too."

Lesson number two:  "Loose" is the opposite of "tight." When you misplace something, you "lose" it. You do not "loose" it.  Example: "I need to lose fifteen pounds; I guess I'd better stop drinking all this tequila and beer."

Lesson number three, and please don't ask me what I've been reading that I've noticed the rampant misspelling of this word: When you are spending a little happy time alone with yourself, you are "masturbating," not "masterbating." And if you need that used in a sentence, you need more help than I can give you.

Jul. 6, 2007 at 8:08 PM LOL, I probably make little mistakes like that alot. I tend to type very fast and don't care if I spell incorrectly. I think of my blog, myspace, comments, etc. as my own and don't care if I spell something wrong. If I am in an environment were those things need to be re-read and mistakes corrected then I always make sure it is perfect.

I'm sorry, but this made me laugh. I mean, even if you don't spell decently enough to know some of these things by yourself, there is a spell check on most programs and blog/e-mail websites now.

Jul. 6, 2007 at 8:11 PM The funny thing is, I read and actually took a test where every word was misspelled, The funny thing is I was still able to read it the mind does not read a word letter for letter but rather all the letters as a whole.  And if the first and last letter are in place then you should be able to read it, Of course you would have to be a person who reads everyday, and is very good at it where you wouldn't have to sound any words out.  That would mess up the whole situation, but if you can read then you wouldn't have a problem reading misspelled words.  Just thought I would share that with you....  I found it very intresting when I saw it.

Dear Crabby,

Thank you for today's lesson.  And may I add:  there is a difference between "hole" and "whole", "do" and "due", "there" and "their" ... and these are just a few of the glaring misuses of words I've noticed in the past 10 minutes!

These aren't MISPELLED words, and they aren't mere typos either!  They are MISUSED words!
