We had a very successful trip to TN. By successful I mean that I didn't kill the kids or my husband on the very long drives. We drove straight through on both legs of our journey and my husband changed up the route we took so that we got to see different parts of the country. The trip home was probably the most scenic as we came back through Kentucky on I-75 through the Danial Boone NF. It was so awe-inspiring that I forgot to take pictures.
While we were in Sweetwater, TN we visited family that I hadn't seen in 20 yrs. This was my Dad's side of the family. I don't know if I told you that my Dad passed away 1 yr ago in April. The purpose of our trip was to have a memorial service with his family and to bury his ashes in the family cemetery. We had a very nice service.(My Mom, sister, brother-in-law and nephew also drove down and stayed with family) My Dad's only surviving brother did a tear jerking recitation titled, "Jesus it's Jimmy." and some other family members sang and read poetry. My sister read her tribute that she wrote for our original memorial service, but I knew I couldn't get up and do mine. My kids picked wild flowers from the field and put them in the grave with their Papa. It was very peaceful, and only after we got home did it hit me that we left my Dad in TN. But I'm ok with it now. It seems silly that I had that reaction since he's already been gone for over a year.
As for the sightseeing and such, we drove to Rock City, in Chattanooga and spent about 3 hrs with the kids. It was a perfect day, a little cloud cover and the threat of rain kept the numbers of people down and we were able to really enjoy ourselves. We packed a picnic lunch and ate just before leaving. We drove back through the Cherokee National forest and the road follows the river. It was a beautiful drive, and my husband and I were surprised at how many river rafting places there were. We are actually thinking of going back in a few years when Connor is old enough and taking a trip down the river. We did not go to The Lost Sea as we were advised by my sister that the water level was down about 14 feet and the stench in the cave was horrible.
I will post pics soon. Hope all is well with all of you.
