yes, you might laugh. But at 25 years old, this is a big deal for me. I left home at 15, went hitch-hiking across the country. When I did finally stay put here and there, I was a viscious bike rider who would smack a car if it cut me off, or knock on someone's window if they were wrongly blocking me. I was a BIKE PUNK!! I had a bike gang! I drank and biked all the time and I wanted a tattoo of a bike!

then..... I got pregnant! Whooops! Well I still rode my bike to work everyday. I was riding my bike on and past my due date. I am a bike bad-ass! But, its time. Time for me to start.... driving?

For the past 7 months I have been strapping my son to my body in either a wrap or a mei tai, and w a l k i ng ever so slowly anywhere I went. Its not bad, and I'm not abandoning it entirely. But there's stuff I want to do with my life, and I'm sick of holding myself back!

I don't want to get in the car every time I need to go half a block away. I still want to bike and walk most of the time. But I also want to become a doula, and then a midwife. And there is no way I can be a dependable doula or midwife without wheels!

So, I have learner's permit now! I am going to get some driving experiance, and then go for the gold-- a real life non-restricted class E florida driver's liscence.

but I'll still be a bike punk, dammit.

Aug. 10, 2007 at 1:37 PM I loved your story, mine is not exciting and entertaining at all........I lived in the city all my life up until 8 months ago, I moved to the suburbs.........I did get my permit in NY.....at age 31, but never got my license, but now that I am in the suburbs I have to drive, I'm getting tired of the bus. I do have to start all over though, NJ will not allow me to use my NY permit to practice driving so now I have to get a NJ permit......that really sucks!!! My hubby is so busy, it took him about a month or so to pick up the driver's manual and now I've been tellig him for almost 2 months to take me to take the written test, the bus doesn't go there.........within the past 2 months he's been working a lot and also got injured about 3 1/2 weeks ago so couldn't take me. So I took a cab there and it turned out I didn't have enough id to take the test that day. That was almost 2 weeks ago, so next week when my mother comes down, i will have her babysit my daughter while I attempt to take this NJ written test, UGHHHHH!!!! I don't understand why they wouldn't accept my NY permit!!! Well, good luck to you on getting your lisence soon!!! Congrats on your accomplishment!
