I feel that the hardest part about being a mom is having a child who needs to undergo surgeries and pain. My ten year old is going to have his 5th or 6th palate repair surgery tomorrow. He has a whole new team of doctors and his dad and I are hopeful that they will be able to get the majority of his palate closed. I am amazed at how brave he is. I am the worry wart, the one whose stomach is tied up in knots. He has been eating all of his favorite meals this past week. We always make sure we do that because we know the recovery is harder and longer as they get older. It was so much easier when he was an infant and just drank out of a bottle. It is hard on the rest of the family to eat in-front of him, knowing that he wants to eat the same food as we are, but can't. I am looking forward to hear him speak after this surgery is completed. His ENT DR. said that this should clear up some of his speech...YEAH!!! He is hoping for that too, no more getting teased at school for that!! Two years ago when he had his last surgery, I was in the recovery room with him when the nurse game him some more morphine, his heart rate shot up and he started to breathe rapidly....I am nervous about that happening again. On a lighter side, he is a healthy boy, I made sure he wasn't around sick people, that he didn't go swimming too late, and he was out in the cool breeze too long. He's been eating more fruits and veges....so all in all I think his immune system is ready.
