Dinner with Rich Jr. This past year, I went to visit my son Rich Jr. who lived with a female roommate, “Molly.” During dinner, I couldn’t help but notice how pretty my son's roommate was. I had long been suspicious of a relationship between the two, and this had only made me more “curious.” Over the course of the evening, while watching the two interact, I started to wonder whether there was more between my Son and his roommate than met the eye. Reading my thoughts, Rich Jr. volunteered, “I know what you must be thinking, but I assure you, Molly and I are just roommates.” About a week later, Molly came to Rich Jr. saying, “Ever since your mother came to dinner, I’ve been unable to find the sugar bowl. You don’t suppose she took it, do you?” “Well, I doubt it, but I’ll write a note to her, just to be sure. Mom has wanted a special urn and perhaps has chosen the silver sugar bowl.” Rich Jr. wrote a note, “Dear Mom, I’m not saying that you ‘did’ take the silver sugar bowl from my apartment and I’m not saying that you ‘did not’ take it. But the fact remains that it has been missing ever since you were here for dinner. Love, RJ” Several days later, I wrote to Rich Jr. :
“Dear Rich Jr, I’m not saying that you ‘do’ sleep with Molly, and I’m not saying that you ‘do not’ sleep with her. But the fact remains that if she were sleeping in her OWN bed, she would have found the sugar bowl by now. "
Love, Mom.
