Listen my son and you will hear
About life and love, and we're gonna be clear
You are still a kid and you are still green
Even though you think you're full grown at eighteen
If we look at you in a special way,
It's because we still see the baby we brought home that day.
You have seen love and fortune and fame
And you have had some fun but life is no game
It's what you are- you honor your word
Why you have never spoken any lie we have heard
It's who you are to your chosen friends
Why you are the one on which they all depend
Win lose or draw you give your all
With you buddies, with your studies, or playin' football.
Maybe you can't see it, touch it or hear it
But all those around you are touched by your spirit.
If we look at you in a special way,
It's because we still see the baby we brought home that day
For all the things we come at you teaching,
Let it ring true that we are not preaching.
If we leave you with advice to ponder,
You have too many of God's gifts to squander.
The gifts of good looks, sports and music
Smart beyond books and the wisdom to use it,
And the gift that never goes out of fashion
The love of others-your empathy and compassion
All our futures will live on in you
We will be there as your dreams come true
For all the things we come at you teaching,
Let it ring true that we are not preaching.
