Today, 35 years ago at 2:41pm, my first child was born after only two hours and 41 minutes of labor. I was very sick with a kidney infection and high fever when he was born, and he had a low apgar at birth and was discolored. He weighed in 7 lbs. 14 oz. and was 20 inches long. He had a headfull of dark curly hair and dark eyes that quickly turned brown. He was a calm and almost placid infant. He walked late--at 18 months. And then, when he was almost three years old, he changed almost overnight into a wild child. Every day was difficult from then on. My husband and I divorced and I became the parent who did all the work with him, endured his "ups" and "downs" that seemed to come in cycles to me and wore me ragged!
He was diagnosed with ADHD, minimal brain damage, depression, and finally, several years ago, I heard the words I had always suspected: bi polar disorder.
He received special ed services his entire school career, and one psych told me he would never be able to live on his own. But, do you know what? All of us were blessed. With great support from our school district and lots of hard work on his part, he graduated with his class and was lucky enough to be hired full-time as a custodian. Today he works for the county as a custodian and does a good job. He also has a lovely fiance who also has some disabilities, drives a nice pick up, and has his own place complete with my Grand Doxie, Valentine.
Happy Birthday, Thomas, with Love from Momas. :)
