I took the decorated computer paper and printed 4 checks on each page as follows:

John Doe (childs real full name)

Lakeland, FL

Bank of Mom and Dad                                                          Check #0001

Pay to the order of:                                                                  Date:

_______________________________________________/100 dollars

Memo____________________                 _________________________

I know it may seem silly, but they looked so real printed on pretty paper. I also created a checkbook register for the back of their checkbooks. I cut each check apart from the other and stapled it just like a real checkbook.

Next is the paycheck. I pay my kids every Friday, based on behavior at school, demerits, household chores, etc. I also created a bonus program with things that the kids are not required to do as chores, but can if they choose to earn extra money. I give my children $100-$400 a week for their play checking acct, no this is not real money. I am a college student, and my husband is a truck driver, we honestly live paycheck to paycheck like most families.

On Friday which is payday for the kids they have to pay bills, just like Mom and Dad. Their weekly bills consist of rent $75.00, electric $30.00, water $3.00, groceries $20.00, cable $15.00, gas $2.00, furniture $11.00, and MOM'S MAID SERVICE!!!

Each week I print their paycheck on the pretty paper and place it in an envelope. I also put a bonus check in if they did the extra chores that I preset a dollar amount to, or if they did something extra special. In reality they will probably only have $100 left a week or less, but if they keep this money we will let them trade it in for 10% value on our payday every 2 weeks. They have to keep a minimum of $50 in their account at all times. We do this so they cannot cash in their fake money and then be little terrors after they have what they want. It works out for us that even if they are angels and keep everything perfectly clean we would have to give them $10.00 every two weeks. I would save that in headache medicine!!!

PENALTIES: I STICK WITH THESE, I DO NOT GIVE ANY MORE VERBAL WARNINGS, I JUST CARRY A CLIPBOARD EVERYWHERE WE GO AND I WRITE IT DOWN. WHEN WE GET HOME THEY MUST PAY WITH THEIR CHECKBOOK THEIRSELVES IMMEDIATELY AND DISCUSS THEIR BEHAVIOR!!

**SCHOOL ISSUES***

PHONE CALL FROM SCHOOL- $25.00

NOTE WRITTEN IN AGENDA- $15.00

SUSPSENSION- $100.00 FOR EACH DAY

BUS SUSPENSION- $75.00 FOR EACH DAY

**HOME ISSUES**

VERBAL ABUSE: $15.00 (SASSING, CUSSING, MAKING FUN OF OTHER, OR EVEN INSTIGATING)

PHYSICAL ABUSE: $20.00 (HITTING, THROWING THINGS, PUSHING, OR TOUCHING)

REFUSAL TO WORK: $25.00 (AFTER BEING TOLD ONCE REFUSE TO DO SOMETHING)

************ALL FINES DOUBLE IN PUBLIC,***************************MY SON'S ONLY ACTED UP ONCE IN PUBLIC BECAUSE THEY DON'T LIKE WRITING EXPENSIVE CHECKS*******

YOU MAY WANT TO GIVE A LITTLE BIGGER PAYCHECK FOR THE FIRST WEEK BECAUSE THEY WILL TEST YOU!!

*****THIS IS MY FAVORITE PART MOM'S MAID SERVICE****************************

I went through their rooms and places in the house where they may have a chore. For the bedroom I have a checklist, bed, floor, closet, dresser, ent center. Bathroom, floor, toilet, sink, and bathtub. I showed them how I expected things to be and helped them on Day 1 to get it to those standards.

Anytime I lift a finger to clean their room, bathroom, or trash they left next to the trashcan they are charged a  fee $5.00-$100.00. I have a form that I created and I leave them a bill on their door. My oldest son has a bill for $10.00 for Mom's Maid Service having to vacuum, and my middle son $5.00 for Mom having to pick up dirty clothes out of the bathroom.

The clipboard is for sanity in public!!! I would advise to use it. It is a good visual aid to keep their behavior in check.

I also give opportunity for my kids to purchase rewards $10.00 each, up to 2 daily. I took construction paper and cut into strips. Each one is a reward such as 30 min playstation, 30 min stay up late pass, 30 min computer, and 30 min alone time with Mom or Dad. I also have things they can purchase on a monthly basis only on certain dates such as a sleepover for $50.00. At the end of this week my boys won't have much money left, but they are happy because they have worked hard to earn their money and can trade it in for many things. The only freebie I give them anymore is time outside after homework and chores are done.

**IF A CHILD GOES IN THE NEGATIVE THEY MUST DO EXTRA CHORES IN THE HOUSE UNTIL THEIR PAYDAY TO EARN THEIR PAYCHECK AND POSSIBLY A BONUS CHECK***

I don't know if this will help anyone else, but so far it is working for me, it has only been a week, but I can actually carry on a conversation with my kids and with other adults without being interuppted. I am also sending this over to Grandma's this weekend so she can enforce the new rules at her home. We will see how it goes. Best of luck to everyone!

Feb. 5, 2007 at 10:36 PM That is absolutely amazing. It is not only saving you headache it is teaching your children things that I think alot of people aren't really ever taught how to do which is keep a checkbook and pay bills. I remember calling my mom asking her about all of that when I moved out. You are teaching those kids so much responsibility and really preparing them for the real world. I bet they grow up to be very productive adults! Congratulations!

Wow I must say that is very creative...Not only are you setting up a positive enforcement for them to behave and help, It is a very valuable lifeskill!!!! Alot of young adults aren't aware of how to handle or run a househole, dorm, or such...this is a very early tool and I see you will have very much sucess with it. Good luck....

God  Bess you!

that's really cool. I watch Supernanny sometimes but there are times I have to turn it off because the kids are sooo horrible to their parents and they let them!

I'm in college, too. I have an 11-month-old. That's a really cool system.
