I am writing you on behalf of Joshua. Joshua was diagnosed with type 1 (juvenile) diabetes on July 25, 2007. He is six years old and will be insulin-dependent for the rest of his life. It has been only 40 days since his diagnosis and he has already endured over 270 fingerpricks and 160 insulin injections. In addition to his rigorous blood testing and insulin shots, when and what he consumes must be accounted for, and his blood levels even need to be checked while he sleeps and plays. This diagnosis has taken the one thing I wanted to give my children the most; a carefree childhood. Joshua, for the most part, cooperates, but even during those times it breaks my heart because he has not accepted it. He has given in. He has no choice. This is what he must do to “feel good.”  So what is a mother to do? I walk. I walk for a cure. Not just for my son, but for all of the children whose poor, little fingers are full of holes. For the mothers and fathers who can’t sleep at night because they are worried that their child may go low and they won’t know. I walk so that Joshua’s hope and prayers for a cure will not be in vain. Please understand, I am not trying to have a pity session. As a parent, it’s our instinct from the moment our kids are born to protect them from any harm. I must do everything in my power to help find a cure for him. It’s my mission to avoid the heart and kidney disease, blindness, amputation, and early death that is a reality for many people with juvenile diabetes.  The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) is the #1 non-profit funder of diabetes research worldwide. One of JDRF’s largest fundraising events is the “Walk to Cure Diabetes.” Joshua, Maggie (his almost 4 year old sister), and I will be participating and raising money towards this cause. The walk will be held on Sunday, September 30, 2007 at Worcester State College. If you are interested, there are four ways you can help us make a difference for Joshua:·         Help us get the word out. Share this letter with family and friends. ·         Check out my official fundraising page for the walk at http://walk.jdrf.org/walker.cfm?id=86771863 and see our progress. Feel free to forward it to everyone in your address book on our behalf. ·         Make an online donation at http://walk.jdrf.org/support.cfm?id=86771863·         You can send a tax-deductible contribution in any amount, made payable to JDRF. We will deliver any donations in Joshua’s honor the morning of the Walk. Thank you for your support and for helping our family team meet our goal of raising $300 this year.                                                                                                             Sincerely,

                                                                                      Wendy Hirtle
