About 4 weeks ago, I was informed that my baby was smaller than docs say he should be. My primary doctor thinks things are fine, while 2 others want to run numerous tests. After all of the testing and bloodwork that has been done so far, the only thing that can be proven is that my baby is just 2 weeks smaller than they'd like. Every time we go in, he has grown, but is 2 weeks smaller than they want him to be. So the 2 doctors think an amniocentesis needs to be done to test the chromosomes and be sure that it isn't down syndrome or anything of the sort. At this point, I am so against the amnio...a lot of things can go wrong with an amniocentesis. I could go into labor early, or one or both of us could get some bad infections, among other things. If they do in fact do the amnio, it will tell them if there are problems, however, nothing can be done until after delivery. I feel like that is a big risk that at this point will only give me more to worry about than anything else. The doctor who is suggesting it, says that it isn't critical I have it done but that he really thinks I should. Says that they can do testing after the baby is born. I feel like I am being thrown back and forth by what the doctors are saying. I am aware that he is small and that something could be wrong, but that nothing can be done til after the birth of the baby. I feel stuck...should I get the amnio and worry about the risk factors, although small? Or should I wait and see what happens after delivery? Right now, they say my baby is happy in every way that they can see. No defects detected in ultrasounds, no problems with the movement tests, good heart, good brain, good spine...such a difficult thing to toss around and make a decision about...

Sep. 7, 2007 at 7:17 PM I wouldn't do a amnio myself But it's up to you and what you think is best. I had numerous friends get amnios and they all miscarried so I don't think it's worth the risk myself.

Sep. 7, 2007 at 10:35 PM I think that you should just wait and not get the amnio. If they truely can't do anything until after the baby is born, then what is the point. If the ball was in my court, I would pass on the amnio and just wait.
