As so many of us are, I was also inspired by HeadMutha, Rocky, this past Spring. I saw she was going to volunteer with Global Volunteer Network and thought, If Rocky can work it out with her 6 children, than so can I, I only have 2!

Tuesday, September 11th I depart for Nairobi, Kenya via London.

I raised money to take with me so that I can DO something while I am there, I have over $1000! I am so excited! I also organized a donation drive with my sons' school. People donated clothing items, bandaids, lice shampoo, wart remover, antiseptics, antiitch cremes, vitamins, calcium tablets, crayons, markers, construction paper, children's scissors, rubber gloves .. the list goes on ....
my dentist donated 300 toothbrushes.

I am packed and ready ... I have 2 HUGE suitcases and one box that I wil pay extra for excess baggage and weight, but I don't care.

As I said goodnight to my 5 yr old sn this evening, he said to me .. Mommy I'm so glad you are going to help the kids in Africa, that's so good that you are going to help them ..... but I'm going to miss you.
Oh, my sweet boy, I will miss you too for the next 19 days, but he's learning that it is important to give.

I mapped out my journey with stickers on the world map in their bedroom. My trip home is with smiley stickers ... because I will be SO happy to see them and so excited to be home again.

This is my hope (and more) ..

A man was walking along a beach. The sun was shining and it was a beautiful day. Off in the distance he could see a little girl going back and forth between the surf's edge and and the beach. As the man approached he could see that there were hundreds of starfish stranded on the sand as the result of the natural action of the tide.
The man was stuck by the the apparent futility of the task. There were far too many starfish. As he approached the little girl she continued the task of picking up starfish one by one and throwing them into the surf. As he came up to her he said, "You must be crazy. There are thousands of miles of beach covered with starfish. You can't possibly make a difference." The girl looked at the man. She then stooped down and pick up one more starfish and threw it back into the ocean. She turned back to the man and said, "It sure made a difference to that one!"
