September 11, 2001, I was in Manhattan. I had an appointment 2 blocks for The World Trade Center. I will never forget the panicked moments after planes hit. As we were being escorted out of the area, I saw many of the heroes on the way to the scene. We did not know what had happened. But I remember even then thinking how heroics these men and women were. How they rushed into this terrible situation without knowing what they would find. Later when I found out that so many of the rescuers had became victims themselves, did I realize how truly brave they were. I cannot imagine the fear that the people in those buildings felt. i knew no one personally that was lost that day. Still, I cried for days afterwards. How could this have happened here?

Seven years later I still ask that question. Later today, at the memorial service I am planning to attend, I will again cry. Our nation was changed forever that day. What would we all give to go back and change it?

Those images are burned into our collective conscience. But me, I will remember what New York City looked like the day I flew into the city. What will you remember most?

My heart goes out to you - as a Native New Yorker I feel sad when I see the altered skyline.

I will never forget the fear I felt that day....the helplessness, the terror. Now I know what my grandparents felt like when Pearl Harbor was attacked. Until that day, I felt relatively safe. I guess we were all naive in thinking someone wouldn't come onto our soil and attack us. Never in my wildest dreams could I imagine something like this happening in our country.

Wow,you must have been scared to death. All the horror of that day will never go away. It will stay with all of us as Americans. I ate at the Windows on the World restaurant for a Thanksgiving in 1986. That is the last time I was in the twin towers,I will never forget it. I feel a loss ,how many of our sisters and brothers were killed needlessly? How many mothers still cry themselves to sleep missing their husbands, their children? I pray for them all. Not only today, but each time a memory enters my mind.

God Bless America,Land that I LOVE.

Blessings to all out there in Cafe Mom world, and hugs .

My brother was there too.  He works in the world financial center, which is the building with the green triangle on top.  He still has nightmares.  (((hugs)))

I'll remember the many times that my Grandma took me to the Twin Towers.  We would take a 10 min ride on the PATH train from Jersey City right into the WTC.  On a clear day, we would go outside onto the observation deck 110 floors up.  If it was cloudy, we could go to the top but we couldn't go out side.  We'd had to view from the inside observation area.  My Grandma was a painter and painted so many pictures of the Twin Towers.  She took all of her nieces, nephews and grandchildren on trips to the WTC.  She loved it there.  There was so much to do!

I loved eating at the Windows of the World restaurant at the top and I had so many good times at a place called Morans - sitting right on the Hudson River.  We used to go every Thursday night after work - everyone did.  I miss that so much!

Before we were married, my husband worked on the 78th floor.  I think some people who worked on the 78th floor made it out.  A friend of mine who was working on one of the lower floors, made it out but was covered in white soot and had to walk back to Brooklyn over the Brooklyn Bridge. Our friend on the 104th floor never made it out.   He was a Dad just going to work.  So many heros ran to the site to try and help. So many beautiful, innocent lives were lost.

The Twin Towers were huge.  There were palm trees inside and a whole mall underground with tons of shops.  I'll always remember how big everything was inside!  I'll always remember how the Twin Towers were double the size of the other bldgs next to them.  I'll never forget what happened on September 11, 2001.

Thanks for your post and for sharing your story.

I have never been to New York but now I honeslty don't think that I could go. I live in Georgia and seeing that horrible destruction of that day will be forever in my mind. I was telling my 3 year old what happened 6 years ago today. And she said mommy but now they are all angels with God and they are ok. I love the innocence of kids they see the good in everything. My heart goes out to everyone who lost a loved one that day as well as the military who to this day continue to fight for our freedom. The president has a tough job on his plate and I think that he is doing everything within his power to help get thing back on track for Iraq. God is the only one who can change the hearts of the people in Iraq and until they are willing to change then we will stay over there helping them to build a democracy. GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!!!!

I remember ths shock of it all & who had the friggin' nerve to do this to us!  I was so spaced out all day due to this; the next day wasn't much better. My daughter was scared, too. No-one feels safe anymore and its NOT over; they still want to kill us! I hope these foreigners cannot get in our state!

Twin Towers 1 I remember visiting the twin towers over the years - being from NY myself ...anyone who came in to visit  me ( from out of state)  , I took there . I remember when i was younger , my dad told me to put my forehead on the window & look down -- very difficult to do when ur scared of heights ! But I did it - & I'm glad I did . I will remember that .... always . Now , thinking of MY moment & fast forward to 9/11 , I can only imagine what all of those people went through & saw . My heart goes out to everyone .....
