The 7-month-old baby shot and killed during a home-invasion robbery Friday afternoon is now believed to have been intentionally shot, rather than accidentally caught in gunfire, authorities announced Saturday morning.
The gruesome development comes as Sacramento County Sheriff's detectives continue investigating the robbery, which also resulted in the death of the baby's 21-year-old father.
On Saturday, the county coroner's office identified the victims as Sean Paul Aquitania and Sean Paul Aquitania, Jr. of Elk Grove.
Sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Tim Curran described the shootings as "very disturbing" and "cold-blooded." Investigators are asking for the public's help in solving the crime.
The incident - which is not believed to have been gang-related - began shortly before 2 p.m. Friday, when the father paid a social visit to a house on the 8400 block of Country Greens Way. Detectives first believed the father approached the house carrying his baby. They now believe he left the baby in a carseat inside the car while he approached the house, Curran said.
As two people inside the home answered the door for Sean Paul Aquitania, two other men approached and forced their way into the home, Curran said. The baby's father was shot multiple times in his upper body and was pronounced dead at the scene once paramedics arrived. The suspects fled the scene, and, on their way out, are believed to have stopped at the car and shot the baby in the head.
The baby died at UC Davis Medical Center shortly after 5 p.m.
Authorities believe the motive for the shooting was robbery, though they are not yet sure what was taken from the home, Curran said. There were few belongings in the house when deputies arrived, but it is not clear if that was a result of the robbery or because the tenants might have been moving soon. The owner of the residence, Margaret Tseng of San Francisco, told The Bee on Friday that the tenants' year-long lease was up at the end of the month.
The two assailants have not been located. Authorities described one as an adult wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, the other as an adult wearing a green shirt and a green Oakland A's hat.
The two occupants of the home - one of whom had left the scene to get help - have been interviewed but are not in custody. Though initially cooperative, Curran said detectives believe they know more than what they are sharing.
"We don't think they're telling us the whole story," Curran said.
Curran noted that detectives have found no evidence of illegal activity within the home
