I'm getting ready to re-enter the "working world" and had a question for all of you moms that are struggling with children with various behavior and mental health issues.  If you did not have insurance to cover therapy sessions (either for yourself, your child, or both), would you pay a non-licensed (but well experienced) therapist a smaller fee?  For example, in my area, licensed therapists range in price from $60/hour and up.  Would you pay a non-licensed therapist a smaller amount to provide the same service?

I have a san with mental health issues also and if I needed services.....

I'd give him a try!  Go talk to him yourself for the first visit.  Kinda feel him out, see what he has to say, and tell him your concerns.  The worst he can say is, " Sorry, I can't help...."

This way you get an idea of what he can and can't do for you.  If things set well with you then I'd try to take your child to him.  Heck!  If it doesn't work our your not comfortable with this person.....move on to another!  Your free to shop around....

I kept trying different ones till I found one that I was comfortable with!   Good luck with you search!

Sep. 27, 2007 at 9:31 AM I have been in the situation with my 10 year old and have gone to a non-licensed therapist with him, to be honest, we had a better experience with her than with his actual licensed therapist. The non-licensed therapist seemed to listen more and be more "hands on" with him, as if she were trying harder!

Oct. 2, 2007 at 8:59 AM Yes I would!  I know what it's like to be money tight !!  Any theropy is theropy.  Just think if you talk to a friend that understands what you are going threw and she talks to you and gives you advise and help.. Isn't that the same and she/he's not liceinced. Some of the licenced counclers are just there for the money!!  Keep me posted !!
