So my husband is a sheet metal worker and he just started his third year in his apprenticeship. Every year the apprenticeship has a competition between the unions to find the best apprentice. There is usually only one union per state. But there are about 5 different types of sheet metal to represent. My husband was asked to represent the union for the industrial side. He has a regional competition to go to in Eastern Washington the beginning of February. That inlcludes: Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Alaska, Canada, Utah, and I think California. If he wins the competition, he will make it to the National Competition, which obviously covers EVERYWHERE!!!! If you win National, you take home $20,000. I don't necessarily know if he will win or not, but it sure will be fun seeing him try and it will be nice to take home even a little bit of cash! The National competition takes place in Las Vegas in April! They will provide him and I round trip airfare and a hotel to stay in. Plus he gets paid his wages while down there. I am sooooo proud of my husband. I mean, I know that he is good, but I didn't know he was THAT good! So freaking cool!!!!

The only part that kinda sucks is that my husband does not read very well, so when he has reading to do for school, I read it all to him. Well from now until next April, I have tons of reading to do for him! I feel like I should be taking the written test for him!!!! Either way, it is a struggle and very good experience for him.

His company already thinks very highly of him. When he was in his second year apprenticeship, he was given a company van to start running work. He is the only apprentice in history to start running his own work that early in the apprenticeship. You have to be a journeyman before they will let you run your own work! He is an apprentice that has journeyman working for him now on  BIG jobs!!! So proud of him!
