Now, there was a day  in January 2007 when I worried if my son would ever draw anything other than a smily face.  He can write all the letters of the alphabet, but he can't talk and he can't really write  - does writing and speech go hand in hand?  I still don't know.

During our move from Rhode Island to Washington STATE in June, I was able to listen to (thanks to the new portable DVD we purchased for the trip) many, many playings of Mary Poppins.  I always loved Mary Poppins.  That is why I bought it and that is why it was one of the first movies I shared with my son (with a bowl of popcorn).  But I never imagined he could watch it hundreds of times.

By about half-way into my cross country trip, I was drawing deep spiritual truths out of Mary Poppins.  Madness is not far removed from revelation.  I love the solid characterizations of people in this movie and the life messages I can take from it.  This movie makes me laugh in many places, not just the tea on the ceilling scene.

Well, sitting in the car my son drew the following picture.  I had to take a picture of it.  By June, his drawings had taken on a more sophisticated quality.  People had box bodies, legs and arms.  The houses has windows and chimneys.  Windmills and cars were also popular themes in his drawings.

This story obviously has captured his imagination.  Now he is reenacting scenes.  He sings in falsetto and calls himself "Cheeky" in the mirror.  Mary Poppins was the first story he reenacted with dolls.  It was always Bert, Mary, Jane and Michael shooting up the chimney or taking the elevator.  So enjoy a little art work from my budding artist.

This is so cool! One for the refrigerator door, huh? :o)

Mary Poppins is a great movie! I haven't been able to get my 2 year old daughter into it yet, but I will do my best. It's one of those nice, clean Disney movies that I wouldn't worry about her watching over and over, as children tend to do! And, you're right, there are some great lessons to be learned from it! :o)
