I have heard this phrase so many times; "God doesn't give you more than you can handle." It has been given to women that are hurting, heart broken and confused- by women who love, care are concerned for the hurting and are reaching out to them. That is so good and I admire these loving, caring women but... The truth is that God sometimes does give us more than we can handle, on our own, and He does it in order for us to see that we need Him. He does it so that we will lean on Him and ask Him for help.
God loves us so much that He wants to have a close, intimate relationship with Him. He will even allow us to go through difficult, even impossible things, in order to draw us closer to Him. These hard things are never given with the intention of us going it alone. Nor are they given to destroy us. They are given as gifts, like our children with DS, to get to know the character of our God and Savior.
I know that this may not be a current or popular view, but I'm not trying to be current or popular. Current and popular change like the wind. What was current and popular in the 70's and 80's? Just food for thought.
Look in your bibles ladies and read how many bible saints were given way more than they could handle on their own. Noah, building a huge ship and gathering all the animals. Impossible without God. What about Job with his staggering losses and suffering, but read the final outcome because he refused to reject God and curse Him. Read about Gideon, the Israelite who was called to subdue the enemies that were continually ravaging their land. Yet he had no authority, he was a nobody. But look at the outcome because he depended on God.
Read about King Hezekiah who's city was under siege, they were out-numbered and taunted by superior forces who couldn't wait to destroy him and his people. Yet look at the outcome because Hezekiah refused to lose faith in God. Look at Joshua against the impregnable fortress city of Jericho. He was victorious because he obeyed God. Read about the little shepherd David against Goliath the giant. Once again, faith in and reliance on God made him the winner.
The list goes on and on. Look at the Apostle Paul in the new testament. He was beaten, imprisoned, shipwrecked, chained, stoned and left for dead, slandered and threatened, all for the cause of Christ. Yet he learned to trust completely in God and knew that the Lord would deliver him from all of his afflictions. All of these real-life people were clearly given more than they could handle if left to their own devices, they had fear and questions, yet with God they were over-comers. And in the end they each had a very special relationship with the true and living God that they could not have had any other way. They had come to really know God intimately through their trials and difficulties.
All of the examples in the bible show that we are in good company. Yes, sometimes God does give us more than we can handle, in our own strength. I am a living example. I have been through things that would have broken me for good had it not been for the love of my savior, Jesus. I've taken the liberty to add two simple words to our comforting phrase; IN HIM, God does not give us more than we can handle, IN HIM.
He loves you more than you can imagine. God bless anyone who reads this.
