Hi-
My name is Rhonda and I have three children. One is 20, one is almost 18 and then there's my daughter, who is 7. My youngest has been through so very much in such a short lifetime. Now we're at a crossroad....she has been diagnosed with Sensory Integration and they're going to test for Aspergers, or possibly mild Autism. I am a social worker and have worked for over 15 years in the field. Recently, I worked for 5 years with children in foster care with therapeautic needs. All the while, I knew something "wasn't right" with Jillian, but I didn't see the signs. Now, they've become glaringly clear and although it's not what someone would want for their child, I'm relieved to get answers. I battled the insurance game and was given disability insurance, which will cover the many pieces of equipment and OT that she needs. Now I'm battling the school for services, which have been denied twice. Testing has also been denied. We recently had a screen for dyslexia done, which constituted testing for this. I have asked the school for this and we meet this coming Tuesday to see if they will do the testing. Keep your fingers crossed! I look forward to having a support system. So many people do not understand any of the disorders that fall under Autism. I, myself, and still learning.....
Rhonda, I know how frustrating and hard it can be fighting the system to get what your child needs. Hang in there mama! Maybe we can help each other! I've fought for over 2 years to get proper diagnostics done and now for his needs to be met both medically and at school. I'm lucky, though, in that I have 3 other parents of my child who share these responsiblities! Call me sometime and we will definately talk.
Jess
