Journal Post

So the EI services coordinator came to my house this morning to screen James for the program. I am concerned about his inability to create words. He babbles quite nicely, but he only says about 7 real words and a bunch of approximations. I know he's a boy, but I figured that he'd be saying a lot more by now. Or putting bye-bye and dada together. Something! Oh, and by the way, I managed to get my house in decent shape for this! She screened five areas of development in James, and he fell short in three of them. I immediately felt inadequate as a mother. I don't remember giving Cate this much instruction, but then she was in daycare by the age of 2. I know my mom worked with her a lot too. The actual evaluation is December 6. So I'll be reading a lot to James in the next month. We'll be working on getting him to do some coloring and stacking blocks. Of course, after the coordinator left, James said the word ball. Well, it was close to ball. So I don't know what to think at this point. Some of the questions I was asked this morning were things that I'd never thought to do with James, like giving him a regular cup, asking him to play with a stuffed animal, putting Cheerios in a cup that he couldn't access..... James is smart, I know he is. He pointed to a circle and said "kil". He was just saying the second half of the word. Was I right to do this?

I don't care (usually) what people think. I just don't want my son to turn 3 and still not be talking much. A friend of mine had this problem with her son, and she asked for help too late, in my opinion. Early intervention was called by my ped's office at my request. IF there is a problem, I'd rather attack it early then wait too long.
