But WTF is up with the "creative" baby naming? I totally get that if you have a child, you get to name it whatever you want, but that doesn't mean I don't get to make fun of it.

It's not that I'm morally opposed to "different" names. I love the "flower" names, like Poppy, that are more prevalent in England. And I love names that reflect a family's ethnicity.  Things like that are a matter of taste. You may not share mine, and that's fine.

But the bizarre spellings knock me for a loop, and I am not a big fan of many of the "place" names (there are exceptions). Today in church they announced the name of a little girl named, and I am not making this up, "Montana Sky." I nearly wept. Which career pinnacle do you see that kid headed for: a seat on the Supreme Court, or head "brass pole technician" down at the local "gentleman's club?" Uh huh. That's what I'm saying.

Nov. 11, 2007 at 6:38 PM Well, as a mom of Ari and ZOE;  I have to say that we wanted different names and those made up of 3 letters and containing one consonant and two vowels.   This had to do, in part, with not liking Nicknames.. really cannot stand that.  I named my kids what I wanted them to be called and they are very definitely exactly the sorts who should be called, Ari, and Zoe.  That's my reasoning...  what are your kids' named?  @

Nov. 11, 2007 at 6:39 PM I went for kind of orginal names: Jason, Gabriella, and Olivia my step-son was named by his mother, his name is Denver Alexander. If I ever adopt him I am switching it to Alexander Denver.

My daughter's name is Indypendence Dolphyna and i'm sure you don't like that.  And on that same level, your feelings about your children doesn't mean that I don't get to make fun of them if they're funny looking or not all that bright...hell, maybe they'll wind up as your local Wal Mart greeter or McDonalds employee.  Oh wait...i'm not mean enough to say something like that.  But apparently you are.  I hope for your childrens' sake that karma doesn't punish them for having such a cruel and outspoken mother!

Actually, ohiomom, you DID say that, so apparently you are, in fact, mean enough to say it. Also, "karma" is the effect of an individual's actions during their lifetime(s) affecting their destiny. So, technically, karma can't punish my children for my cruelty.

Moving on...making fun of someone (as you suggest) for something they can't change, such as their features or intelligence, is undeniably cruel. That's a little different from making fun of a parent's choice of name.

And what's wrong with being a WalMart greeter or McDonald's employee? Both are honest work. Who's being elitist and judgmental now, hmm?

ROTF!   Yep, there certainly are a LOT of parents out there who do NOT consider the future when naming a child!
