I haven't cross-stitched since I was 8 years old, nearly 30 years ago.
I can't remember how to do the colors. Do you start with a color, then if there is another color in between, do you count over how many x's there are and finish with the original color? Or is there some other way to skip the other color? Does that make sense?
Also, do you finish a row of Xs, or do you do one line of the X and then come back to them and do the other line (say you start with up strokes..do you finish with the down strokes only AFTER you've finished the one side of the x?
Does ANY of that make any sense?
thanks
One tip that may help, is the back should look pretty decent...you shouldn't be dragging thread across the back...I would suggest not jumping to different spots over an inch away. I would secure the thread and cut it...then secure it in the new section. Work one row....of / to the end of the row and then work the \ on that same row. You will know when you are stitching it right if the back of the rows looks more like | instead of x. Make sense? Also, always make sure that the first line that you sew, all go in the same direction, over all of the piece. Like ALL the first stitch you lay down should be slanted in the same direction..../ and then ALL the top stitches on the whole piece should be this way ...\ ... Visually, it looks better and it will make a difference in the overall piece!
So, yeah, like the above reply...if there is a color, other than what you are currently using...count those blocks...and drag the thread under...to the next block with the color you are using. Unless it's a huge gap...then cut it and restart.....You shouldn't have any loose thread showing on the back either, it can get "dragged" up into a hole when you are working in that area later...it can mess up the color on the front. I LOVE to cross-stitch...so, let me know if I can help at all?!!! : )

You use up one color in a block first then go to the next. If you try to switch colors every single time in one line you'll make yourself crazy! LOL
Say this is your pattern:
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Well you get the idea. You would do a block of the blue. So you would do first line of blue XXXXXXX then drop down to the next line / / / / / / / / / / go backwards \ \ \ \ \ \ \ to make your row of XXXXXX. Then drop to the next line. Then when you have all the ajoining blue done, then go to the next block of blue. Then when that's done, then next blue, then the red. I hope that made sense and helped a bit.
