I have had a few people ask me how to make the no sew tutu that I made for Marley for her Santa's Girl tattoo/tutu photographs.
I was in need of a red tutu for these pictures and did not want to spend the $20-$35+ dollars that tutus retail for, although had I ordered one from Etsy it would have been more finely crafted I have no doubt. I was just trying to save a few dollars and I was up for the challenge. So I Googled how to make a tutu, which I recommend doing, and this pattern looked the easiest.

It is a woman, who is also a mother, who is a photographer. She takes self portraits of her and her son, as well as her doing housework topless in a tutu. Anyhow, her pictures are really awesome, she has a photo journalistic style and a real talent. She was kind enough to share her pattern for the no sew tutu that she wears in the photographs. It is very easy. I went to my local Wal-Mart and purchased 3 yards of red tulle and 3 yards of sparkly white tulle, so a total of 6 yards. I also bought soft stretch elastic, that's it! You cut your tulle into strips, they can be wide strips, skinny strips, my are really uneven strips about 3-4 inches wide. Then cut the long strips in half, so your strip is about a foot and a half or so long and 4 inches wide. You then fold your strip in half and loop it around your elastic. Ambrosialove made a drawing in her instructions if you are unsure of what I'm talking about. I did all of the white tulle first. Then I went around and in between each white strip I put a red strip. This gives it some layers, so the red is on top. You could do it in stripes, more like a cheerleader skirt, you could do 5-8 strips of one color, and then 5-8 strips in a row of another color. You can use all one color, two colors, 15 colors. I was really surprised at the range of colors Wal-Mart carried of tulle. Who knew that tulle was available at Wal-Mart in so many colors? The tutu possibilities are unlimited. Once finished I just safety pinned the elastic together when Marley put the tutu on. This way it was easy to get on and off of her, without having to pull it up, because prior to this she wanted nothing to do with a tutu, now she loves them. This way it is also adjustable as she grows, although the elastic will give as she grows. You could sew the elastic together, but then you'll have to pull the tutu on like you would a skirt, but you also wouldn't have to worry about the safety of a safety pin. If you want your tutu to be shorter, which might be cute also, just use shorter strips of tulle. My next tutu I am going to try and make shorter. I went last night and bought some more tulle to make two more tutus, one more for Marley hot pink and bright grass green, and one for a friend, but she's a CafeMom so I won't reveal the colors until I make it and get it to her.

If you make a tutu, please send me a picture, and of course get in on our Toddler Tattoo/TuTu Tradition and send me that photo too. I will put all of the photos I collect into a journal to document the crafty work of CafeMom's.
If anybody else has a new sew tutu pattern that is different please do share. I have seen some on Etsy, you buy the pattern for, that have a satin ribbon wrapped around the waistband, that look beautiful. I might break down and buy the pattern so I can figure out how to add that embellishment.
Have fun making your tutus!
