This is my Shih Tzu's favorite snack!  I hope your 4 legged baby enjoys them as well.  Its so easy to forget about the one's who cannot speak during the holidays.  Spread a little joy and put these in a gift basket for friends who have pets.  They are a huge hit with mine.  And its also a great project for the kids to help out with.

  • 3/4 c hot water or meat juices
  • 1/2 c margarine
  • 1/2 c powdered milk
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 tsp sugar
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 3 c whole wheat flour

in a large bowl, pour hot water over margarine.  add powdered milk, salt, sugar and egg, mix well.  add flour 1/2 c at a time mixing well after each addition.  knead 3 to 4 minutes adding more flour if necessary to make a stiff dough.  Pat or roll out to 1/2 inch thickness and cut out w/ a dog biscuit cutter.  Place on greased baking sheet and bake at 325 degrees for 50 minutes.  Allow to cool and dry out until hard.

To give as gifts, I wrap these in saran wrap, tie off with stick type chewies and curling ribbon.  Enjoy!!

Dec. 21, 2006 at 3:19 PM That looks like a really good recipe I have an over weight dog so I don't like for him to have a lot of store bought treats. I never thought of making him treats before thank-you for the idea.
