Well, it was bound to happen. A trip to the ER. With 3 kids 4 and under - I am surprised it took THIS long.
My 3 year old son decided to drink the liquid from his Spiderman light. It looks like a mini lava lamp. The top piece came off and the only thing preventing the liquid from coming out was a rubber stopper - that is easy to take off. We've had this item since August and I never thought the top COULD come off.
This happened at 3:30 pm today. He was fine - no vomiting, foaming at the mouth, nothing. He was just sad that I was so mad. So I searched online for the product to see if I could come up with the ingredients. It looks like water - but you never know. And of course - it was made in CHINA, so I REALLY wanted to know.
I called Poison Control. The lady on the other end was SO helpful. She called Walmart for me and tried to figure out what it was. Walmart - WHO SELLS THE PRODUCT - didn't even know what the liquid was.
Then, I called the manufacturer (Idea Nuova, Inc.) based in New York City. Even THEY didn't know what was inside it and they are listed as the MANUFACTURER. They were nice and seemed very concerned - and informed me that all they knew was that it was a foreign substance and to take my son to the hospital to have his stomach pumped!
I then called my pediatrician. He told me to take him to the hospital as well.
So there we were. The hospital wasn't busy. The nurse and doctor were very nice and friendly. And my son was having a GREAT time. I wished they could make it a BIT unpleasant, so maybe it will stick in his brain not to do this again. The doctor talked to poison control again, and poison control was still talking to the manufacturer. Bottom line - nobody knows what the liquid is. And still doesn't.
We're home now. My son seems perfectly fine and is sleeping peacefully. However, it makes me wonder how these products can get sold without SOMEONE (the store who buys them, the manufacturer who makes them, or even Marvel Characters, Inc - who owns the spiderman logo) knowing what the product is made of?
How hard is it to keep a list of what liquid is in a product that is marketed for CHILDREN'S ROOMS?
I think I may have to write a letter. But I thought I'd share with all of you first. I've attached the picture of the product in case anyone is interested. My suggestion - if you are going to buy it - keep it out of reach from your kids.

Comments:
Oh Amy, I am enraged! Girl get your letter ready and if needed let me know and I'll write one too! No never mind I'm going to write any.
I believe you are in a one party recording state and if it were me, I'd remake those phone calls and record the conversations too. I'd also be contacting the media. This is UNACCEPTABLE on all levels.
WOW! I find it quite concerning that no one knows what the liquid in those lava lamps are. How can they make, market and sell such things not knowing what it is made of? Someone somewhere has to know what is in those lamps. Both of my children have those lamps in their rooms. Especially my daughter she is really into those lava lamps, along with disco balls and the strobe lights.
I'm glad your son is doing good. I would definitely write that letter. I myself would like to know what it was that your son ingested,I can only imagine what you are thinking. Keep us posted.
