Here's my .50c. I use snopes a lot but this time I don't think they posted all the info. They answered a very specific question in a way that left other info wide open.
I've read all the books in the series. It's true that a "god" figure is
killed, but i think the story is about redemption and renewal. The author in
the books does not say this is a christian god, although that is
implied. I haven't heard anything from the author except what's on snopes and once again this was an answer to a very specific question, but this is what I got from the story.
However this version of "god" had good intentions but was overthrown by
a "bad angel" (in a what if satan had triumphed over God way) and no one knew it and it's about
people using the church for personal gain and not to spread the "good"
message. The children make the ultimate sacrifice in giving up the
thing they most want, to save the world. They replay the adam and eve
theme, but in this ending "satan" does not win.
This is definitely a series for preteens and older. The purpose of the
book in my opinion and as a religious studies minor is to make you
question what the "people" of the church are telling you. What are the
results when people use the church to spread a personal message (like
creationism today). Is that message true to any "gods" good message. IMO it's a reaction to a fear of our own mortality.
I would not take any young kids to the see the movie since the girls
parents are ultra mean, and there are bad mean creatures. Any kids that
do see the movie should be able to debate the churches message vs. the
right thing to do. For example children are "killed" for the church and
everyone involved thinks it okay because the church said they could do
it. Then when an adult questions this attitude they realize they are
wrong and try to stop the church. Otherwise, I can't wait to see the
movie.

It is a choice to see or read it. I personally look at it as just a story and it won't shake my faith and I don't think it will change what I have been teaching my boys. I am sure we will eventually see it like once it is on TV. Maybe these people should not watch Harry Potter it is against Christians beliefs with all the magic and such. I mean come on people it is a story. Even if the person who wrote it believes what it is suppose to portray if your faith is stong then it won't change anything. I am sure there are a lot worse things out there then this.
