An ICE STORM WARNING goes into effect tonight for counties south of I-80. A WINTER STORM WARNING goes into effect for counties along Interstate 80 up to Highway 20. Current thinking is that precipitation will begin as freezing rain over most of eastern Iowa generally after midnight tonight, so the evening and after-work commute tonight doesn’t look to be impacted. Once we pass midnight tonight, freezing rain will break out causing slippery travel very quickly as air temperatures will be down into the mid-20s in many areas.
Tomorrow morning, precipitation will be likely. South of Interstate 80, precipitation may stay as freezing rain longer, allowing for significant ice accumulations in excess of 0.50”. It appears later tomorrow morning north of Interstate 80, things should change over to a sleet and snow mixture.
Total snow accumulations don’t look to be impressive, likely 1-3” north of highway 30, perhaps isolated higher amounts in-between Highway 30 and Interstate 80. Ice accumulations are the concern. Around Highway 30, ice accumulations may approach 0.25”-0.35” with upwards of 0.50” of accumulation along and south of interstate 80. Down near the Iowa/Missouri border, isolated locations may see up to 1.00” of ice.
Power outages and downed tree branches may be a potential with this storm, especially to the south, therefore it is advised to have a fully charged cell phone, a few extra blankets, and flashlights with extra batteries on hand, just in case.
ONE FACTOR THAT MAY MAKE THIS STORM WORSE IT THAT THERE IS ALREADY A SMALL ICE ACCUMULATION ON MOST TREES IN THE WARNING AREA. THIS ICE ACCUMULATION IS UNLIKELY TO MELT OR FALL OFF BEFORE THE STORM BEGINS.
IN THESE TYPE OF HEAVY ICE EVENTS...EXTENDED POWER OUTAGES MAY
LEAD TO THE RISK OF CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING WHEN PEOPLE MISUSE
PORTABLE HEATING DEVICES. PROPER VENTILATION IS A MUST.
