Why do the happiest times and the saddest times seem so close?

I don't understand why so many loved ones pass around this time of year. My MIL just passed a week after Thanksgiving. DH seems to be handling it ok I guess. We just got back from visiting her in Colorado on the 26th,  her on the phone the 27th. We got and email from DH's cousin on Dec 6th, that her work was looking for her. She had not been to work all week and they were going to fire her. I called to police department in her city. They found her in bed. The say she passed on the 29th. How could her work not send any one to her house that whole time?  My mom passed 7 years ago on Jan 04th so Christmas was hard enough. My boys are having a hard time dealing with it. Raistlin won't talk about because it makes him mad. Christopher cries if you talk about grandma. I don't know what to do to help them.
