So between the last month of my work being the busiest I ever remember and the wicked stomach bug that came and lasted for almost two weeks - I've felt much more like the grinch than my typically holly jolly self these days (my dog is named Holly - I LOVE CHRISTMAS). My house is sparsely decorated, no baking this year and because of the flu I barely got to shop (though i seemed not to lack for gifts!) except online.
So a few weeks ago in another group I belong to one of my buddies brought up the idea of doing a RAOK (random act of kindness) on a particular day - similar to the movie pay it forward. I've done it a few times throughout the year (I am a big believer in karma) like having an extra train ticket and giving it to the guy who forgot his wallet.
So today as I ran out to get a last minute gift for my hubbys cousin (since we are now visiting tomorrow) and was still feeling a bit in a funk. I decided to not yell or cuss at the bad drivers but somehow didnt seem enough. So I got to the mall and started thinking about a coffee. I rounded the corner and smelled the gingerbread latte. Well it set off a lightbulb in my head. Today was the day for a RAOK. So as I paid for my overpriced drink (but ohhhh was it worth it) I purchased a gift card. I anxiously waited for the next patron. I was so happy to see two tired looking moms with their infants walk in. As mom 1 reached the corner I turned to her and said "Happy Holidays - your coffee is on me today". I was so excited - and it sounds dumb but my heart was pounding. She was so sweet and so excited - asked if I was sure. I said that my friends and I had decided that this season we would do at least one RAOK for someone in the spirit of the season and that today was my day - and enjoy. She thanked me again and I went about my day - gingerbread latte in hand - a spring in my step and a smile on my face. This is what Christmas is all about.
It is so much better to give then to receive.
