The Assyrian New Year (called Akitu by Assyrians) lies on April 1.

The Cambodian New Year or Chaul Chnam Thmey in the Khmer language, is the name of the Cambodian holiday that celebrates the new year. The holiday lasts for three days, most commonly, from April 13th to 15th.

Chinese New Year is the most important of the traditional Chinese holidays. It is an important holiday in East Asia. The festival proper begins on the first day of the first lunar month in the Chinese calendar and ends on the 15th. 2008 date = February 7.

The Islamic New Year is a cultural event which some Muslims partake on the first day of Muharram, the first month in the Islamic calendar. Many Muslims use the day to remember the signifance of this month, and the Hijra, or emigration, Muhammad made to the city now known as Medina. 1429 AH: 10 January 2008

Hindu New Year is celebrated in parts of India in the form of various springtime festivals like the festival of Baisakhi, which among other things, also marks the beginning of a New Year in Punjab. In Maharashtra, the festival of Gudi Padva which usually falls on the month of March or April. This year the Gudi Padva falls on the 19th of March.

Also, originally observed on March 15th in the old Roman Calendar, New Year's Day first came to be fixed at January 1st in 153 BC, when the two Roman consuls, after whom - in the Roman calendar - years were named and numbered, began to be chosen on that date, for military reasons.



Not that anyone in America cares, as history or another homosapien's culture means nothing to anybody here anymore.

Fricking bullcrap holidays anyway! There should only be three. Memorial Day, July 4th, and Veterans Day. The rest are only for mass consumerism.

Jan. 1, 2008 at 6:20 AM Don't forget that the Wiccan New Year is November 1st. Although I totally disagree with only the military holidays being celebrated. I think every holiday should be cause for celebration, because life needs to be celebrated at every available opportunity, under any excuse desired. It's too short to not add in little extra bits of enjoyment.

Jan. 1, 2008 at 5:24 PM I agree that we should celebrate life, but I don't believe that we need a holiday to use as an excuse to celebrate. These days, holidays are only about mass consumerism. There is no meaning anymore. But, to each their own ;)
