Well here is what we found out this morning at the meeting with the psych.   DJ demonstrates characteristics of highly functioning autism.   This is not what the psych said directly but I have done enough reading about it that the signs are there.  The ADHD compounds things as he scored poorly on the memory sections of the test.     We decided that he will begin receiving special help with reading comprehension and written expression.  These will be in the form of goals and added to his IEP.   He now qualifies as a student with a disability under the category Other Health Impairment (minor).    I will be taking the report from the psych to DJ’s doctor and if need be I will seek out a developmental pediatrician to continue working with DJ.   One of the things the report stated was that at times DJ interacts with his peers inappropriately and has difficulties in being accepted by others.    I believe this to be due to his communication delays that he experiences.   DJ has above average math skills, and word recognition but has difficulty with comprehension and written expression.   The lack of eye contact is another concern that makes him stand out from his peers.    I am personally thrilled with the Big Walnut School System for going to such lengths to help see that he gets the education he deserves.    The time they have taken with him and everything that everyone is doing to help see that the bright little boy inside of him gets out really makes me proud.   In a larger school district he would have been pushed aside or stuck in some special classroom where he wouldn’t learn anything.  Now he is getting that fair chance academically.    They want to help him and for this I am so thankful.

Now onto coping as a parent to that wonderful happy bright young man, I am scared because I know what a cruel world we live in. I know that other kids are going to make fun of him, tease, ridicule him because he is different.  It’s starting now in 3rd grade.  I see him shunned by other members of his basketball team, even though he is highly athletic and talented.   It’s hard as a parent to take all this in. He has had an IEP since Kindergarten and he is progressing nicely but I am scared for him.    I guess only time will tell and we will continue to take things one day at a time.    Any other mothers have any advice?  How do you get that dx?  And then once you get it what do you do with it?   He is already getting all the accomodations possible at his school.

Any insight and advice is apprecaited.
Thanks for listening...

Take care girl.  It sounds like a great group of people at the school to help him.  I know what you mean about the big schools - the kids are one of the big reasons we moved back home - smaller schools pay more attention.

have a good day
