This winter my husband has put up three bird feeders in various parts of our yard. Two of them can be viewed from our livingroom picture window. We have a wide variety of birds who have decided to come to our cafe. A mother and father dove snack mostly on what falls to the ground. The cardinals are some of the most beautiful that come. We also have a pair of woodpeckers that are so fun to watch hop up and down the tree trunk. A whole flock of sparrows and a bunch of crackles or blackbirds enjoy the food fair, too. The blue jay is the naughty one, trying to scare all the others away so he can get his fill.
But the most interesting of all the creatures who feed in our yard is the squirrel, who stops by at least twice a day. He has learned how to get food out of the newest bird feeder, which is supposed to be squirrel proof. He scurries up the tree, climbs on top of the pink hacienda birdhouse, and stretches his front legs out until he can get them on the bird feeder. How he balances himself when he is stretched to the limit, I have no idea, especially since the birdhouse is suspended from the tree limb on chains, making it swing. But he does. He manages to get plenty of food, while the little sparrows keep right on eating on the opposite side of the bird feeder.
Watching God's creatures is such a pleasant passtime. My cat enjoys it just as much as I do. He and I actually have conversations about the activity taking place in our front yard. Sunshine, the cat, comes cackling to me to let me know when the squirrel is climbing our tree. Sometimes he seems to plead with me to turn him loose and allow him to take chase. Nothing doing! He is an indoor cat and going to stay that way.
