FEAR OF THE LORDJo Berry “The Fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge ofthe Holy One is understanding  Proverbs 9:10   Proverbs 9:10  says, “The Fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.”  So, if we want to be wise enough to properly interpret God’s practicalities for good living, first we need to fear Him. What is fear of the Lord?  When I was a child, I thought it meant I was to be afraid of Him, which made it very difficult for me to relate to Him, because it is hard to get close to someone who frightens you.  “Fear” was an awesome-sounding word that conjured up images of hell fire and brimstone. Fortunately, that isn’t what the word “fear” means.  It means to respect, revere, and worship.  A wise person holds God in high esteem and worships Him in both attitude and action.

Solomon recorded that, “The fear of the Lord is to hate evil” (Proverbs 8:13).  God is holy, separate, and set apart from all that is sinful and evil.  He hates sin.  Therefore, if we fear Him, we incorporate His value system into our lives and hate everything that is wicked, immoral or iniquitous.
