I think if you are going to have the guts to start a topic of conversation that you know can be controvesial you should have the guts to listen to the other side. This means not get so offended you stop talking because you cant find a way to express yourself past their arguement. Plus if you choose to go that route you should be ok enough with your own beliefs not to be rattled or visibly upset because someone else doesn't agree. Our country is founded, based, and at war to protect our freedoms. Why is it then that lately if you don't say everything people want to hear you get treated almost as an enemy or terrorist? I have strong opinions on things, but I also have enough respect for myself and my opinions to not try to make everyone think like me. I know people won't always agree, and that is ok. We don't have to agree on EVERYTHING to be friends. This country was a bunch of immagrents form different areas to begin with. Diversity is the way of our lifes its what makes us all unique in our own right. If you can't handle listening to all sides of a choice topic don't bring it up. It keeps the peace a lot better if people don't know everything about you.

I agree to an extent, but I think that a line is crossed at a certain point when an expressed opinion goes beyond mere disagreement.  When comments become insults and debates descend into catfights... well, I don't think anyone should be expected to put up with that, or be criticized for making a hasty exit from the exchange.  I can handle opposing opinions (I even welcome them), but I don't dish dirt, and I don't engage anyone who does.

JMO, though.  :-)
