I know it is tradition, and being a Pennsylvania native, groundhog day is SHOVED down our throats. LOL! I personally think it is one of the strangest things in the world, and don't understand how the heck it ever came to be. So this poor groundhog lives in a box under a tree trunk for his entire life?!?! Held captive?!?!?! Then we force him to come out once a year and decide whether or not winter is over?!?!?!?! WTF!?!?!? I just don't really understand, so what I say is RUN little Phil, RUN!!!! LOL!

Feb. 1, 2008 at 1:46 PM I live near Pittsburgh and I totally agree with you.  When I was in college in Clarion, GH day was just one more excuse to drink.  Who cares about the poor little groundhog?  And he's not even very accurate so why does this keep going on?

Feb. 1, 2008 at 1:48 PM I never did get it either. I think its really weird. Also the theory is if he sees his shadow then 6 more weeks of winter. That doesnt make sense. You would think in order to see a shadow the sun has to be out right? If the sun is out wouldn't you think the weather is pretty good? If its all cloudy and dark and he doesn't see a shadow then spring is around the corner. What? The whole thing just needs to stop!

He doesn't really live in the box all year does he?  I have always pictured him sitting in a zoo some place sipping on a tall cool one and then they come and get him for the festivities!  I live in Northeast Ohio not too far from PA and we are just as weird with the whole day too!  Plus, has he ever really been right?
