Can you name ten things of fruit? Or Can you name ten things that are sweet? But most of all can you name The Ten Commandments? And do you know what they mean? Mothersloveforsons.

OOH!  I know!!

1) You shall have no other gods, you shall not make graven images (idols)

This means you place no one and nothing ahead of God EVER.  Idolatry is forbidden.  Some people believe this even extends to picture taking and art.

2)  You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain

Basically, let your yes be yes, and your no be no.  No swearing (taking oaths) in God's name in vain.  Things like "OMG" also fall into this category.

3)  Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.

The 7th day of the week (Sabbath) is the day God made as a day of rest.  We are not to work on this day, but it is typically used as a day of worship.  *note* Saturday is the 7th day, but most people do not recognize it as such.

4)  Honor your father and mother.

Honor means "to show respect to", "to bring honor to".  It does not necessarily mean "to obey", especially if they are not emphasizing the ways of God to their children, which is their first responsiblity.

5) You shall not murder.

Yeshua also said that this means we shouldn't be angry at our fellow believers without cause.  Unjust anger equals murder.

This also does not negate God's other laws regarding times of war, capital punishment, and self-defense.

6) You shall not commit adultery.

You may not have sex with or sexual thoughts about anyone who is not your spouse.  Covers all manner of sexual immorality.  Also, remarrying after a divorce that was NOT caused by adultery or abandonment is considered adultery.

7)  You shall not steal

A basic law in any society.  Stealing is not conducive to a safe and happy community.  Also, it's behavior unbecoming a believer in God.

8)  You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

Don't lie about other people.  Slander, libel, falsely accusing someone, etc.  We are to be careful with this one, talking to the person in private, rather than spreading gossip about them.

9)  You shall not covet you neighbor's wife or home.

Coveting is yearning or desiring.  God wants to be happy with what we have, not to begrudge others their happiness.  Also, a blend of the adultery law and the stealing law.  Once you covet, it is hard not to act on the impulse.  He wants us to curb the impulse from the start.

10)  You shall not covet your neighbors possessions.

Again, coveting leads to stealing.  We should help our neighbor to keep their things, not be jealous of them.
