My son is starting, and I emphasize, just started to kind of almost climb out of his crib, he is 17 1/2 months old. He has just started potty training and seems pretty smart. I just don't know when to put him into a regular twin type bed with rails??? If I do will I have to use a monitor or a gate to keep him in the room, or sleep in there on a sleeping bag for a while till i know that he is relatively safe???? HELP Experienced MOMMIES!!

Feb. 2, 2008 at 9:55 PM I put my boys in big bed at 2.  Jackson climbed out once at 8 months then never again until he was two.  Walker started climbing out at two.  I say take them out when they are climbing out.  We used a monitor in there room and turned the door knob backwards so we could lock it from the outside.  It works well. as long as you have a monitor.  They are almost three and we don't have to lock it anymore.  Once they get in there they don't come back out.  Good Luck.

My Dr,. who is a Mom I admire, says if they are climbing out of the bed, you need put them in a regular bed, it is safer.

My son climbed out of his bed once when he was around your son's age.  But he fell and scared himself pretty bad.  I told him not to do it again and amazingly, he listened to me.  I did not put him in his big boy bed until he was 2 1/2.  Even then he waited another 4 months before he left the bed alone.  He would just wait there in his bed until I came to get him.  Finally I told him, if you want to get up, just come into Mommy and Daddy's room to get us.  Which was great, except this morning at 5:24 AM, you know, LOL!

Feb. 2, 2008 at 10:01 PM I was able to do it at 18 months, that is what he wanted and he got it...He climbed out and that was it...Once you know he is able to climb out, give him his bed. Think about it, he will be able to get out of the crib anyway if you leave him there..But he could get hurt, by falling...Keep the monitor in his room. I put up a gate but left my bedroom door open so I could hear him...Boy did I hear him...Your instincts are going to be alot more sensitive to everything...You will hear him don't worry...
