Feb. 3, 2008 at 12:25 AM It depends! If they are in college maybe 50 bucks, if there not then 100!!

Feb. 3, 2008 at 12:30 AM I think that it helps teach them responsibility. It seems like a lot of kids today take things for granted. Some parents let their kids get a way with all kinds of things. That is just my opinion though.

Feb. 3, 2008 at 1:27 AM I have told my daughters that as long as they're in college, they can stay with me rent-free even if they have a part time job for personal expenses. If they decide to drop out or go straight into the work force, they will be paying rent (maybe $100 to $200) and a portion of the utilities.  They'd be paying a heck of a lot more if they got their own place, so I'm a bargain!! :)

Feb. 3, 2008 at 10:30 AM I paid rent after I was out of the Army, and it was steep too! Not only did I have to pay rent, but I had to do everything for myself (I had to do everything for years, so that wasn't a big deal). But it was frusterating, and I guess it gave my parents what they wanted... which was me out of the house faster! Would I make my kids pay rent? Depends... I think if they are out of college and still living at home, yes. But they will be independant, not dependant on me for laundry, food, cleaning their messes, etc.

I did when I first got a job at 19, I paid like $200 a month but my family was poor.  Hubby never paid rent, his mom paid for his college and even after he moved back home for 5 months, he never paid.  Then he got his job and has never moved back home.  his family has money.

so I would say it depends on what your kids are doing, how your income is, are your kids working, are they wasteful in spending, do they appreciate all you do for them?

I know that I will have to take care of my disabled son forever, so asking for rent is out of the question.  I expect my dtr will follow family tradition and go to BYU and maybe my other son too.  I want them to go to college and move away and have their own lives.  Its my job to take care of my disabled son, not theirs.

Feb. 3, 2008 at 10:44 AM When I turned 18 I chose not to go to college. So I worked and paid my parents $75 a week in rent. I think that it was a great step in me learning responsibility of taking care of bills and such. Hubby and I have talked about our own kids. My personal feeling is if they choose to go to college and want to live at home then they can buy their own clothes and any special food they want but I won't really charge them rent. However if they dont want to go to college and just work then they will have to chip in rent.

My daughter is moving home to go to college. She will be going part-time so she will be paying rent. If she decides to go full-time I will not require her to pay rent because I don't want her to have to try to work full-time and go to school full-time. She will be required to pay for her personal items, gas, car payment, insurance, entertainments, etc. so she would need to work some if she's in school full-time.

I moved out on my 18th birthday.  I hope that my kids will be going to college.   I really can't understand why adults would live with their parents.
