When I noticed that Zander was having trouble (for a lack of better words)...pooping. We took him to the doctor and he was started on Miralax. After about a week on the medication, he continued to have trouble. So, we took him back to the pediatrician again. The doctor felt a lump and as a result, Zander had an ultrasound which showed a tumor on his left kidney. As you can imagine, the news was shocking. Than night, Zander had a CT scan and the results devastated our family. Zander had a tumor growing all the way around his left kidney. He had a six hour surgery the next day to remove his kidney. A port for chemotherapy was placed during the surgery. Studies confirmed that the tumor was in fact a Stage 2 Wilms' tumor. Zander stayed in the hospital for 3 weeks. It was very difficult to see him in such a helpless state. He kept asking us for "num nums and juice please". Zander was unable to eat for days due to his nasogastric tube. His arms were restrained because he tried to pull out his foley catheter. I can't say that I blame him! He never let the surgery get him down. Zander may have lost his kidney, but never his spirits! He quickly resumed being a two year old little boy. During his last day at the hospital, he received his first dose of chemotherapy.  Zander continued having his weekly chemo treatments. We finally thought that we were out of the clear and had beaten this, but we were wrong.  Some of the cancer cells had already spread.  Zander ended up growing another tumor. This time it is wraped around his spine.  The larger the tumor is the more it pushes against his spinal cord.  It is to risky to have surgery on it, but they did biopsy it to see if it was cancer.  Sadly the results came back positive for cancer.  They wanted to run more test.  When the results came back it shocked us.  The cancer had alreay spread to his lymph nodes and is now stage 3.  The doctors gave us several options that we can take, but they would only prolong his life. With the treatment they say he might have a year or so left.

I am so sorry.at least you were givin options and a timeline. my grandpa lost his battle a couple of years ago. he had a cough for a while, waited for months before going to the doctor (small town, 4 hour drive to a doctor). when he finally went. they kept him for a couple days treating him for pnuemonia. this was a few weeks before his 80th birthday, the last time i saw him. a few weeks later we all went to his birthday party ....the enrtire town plus my aunt and uncle flew in right before we did. my gramma had kept us posted about the cough and he seemed okay. we all went home and a month later..and two days before thanksgiving my dad calls me (the granpa is on dads side) and says that grampa has been admitted again but its cancer in his lungs. dad said he was flying back down and would keep us posted. i called my grampa for what turned out to be last time the next day because my dad called on thanksgiving and said he was gone. it had spread to his brain. he met my then 2 year old once. i still miss him. i'm glad i called him.

i am sorry for you but i am glad you have time. a lot of people dont get time. they get news.
