Last night my boyfriend, Bear, took me out for a delayed Valentine's Day and early anniversary date. We'll have been together for 2 years at the end of Feb. which is funny since he's been living with me for over two years already (long story). We go to a very nice french restaurant, the type where the owner wanders around chatting up the customers. We're having a very nice time, when he approaches us,and starts quizzing Bear on why he's not holding my hand. Bear humors him and takes my hand and talk turns to other things. As the man gets ready to hit the next table, he points out a beautiful room that we can partially see into. "Have you noticed that lovely room there? People like to get married in our gardens and have the reception in that room" Bear's hand involuntarily clenches on mine. "When you two get married, you should use that room." Bear's hand is now noticeably sweaty. I can't look at him, or I'll start laughing. The owner then announces, "when you're ready to leave, let me know and I'll give you a quick tour!" and walks away. When I notice little beads of sweat on Bear's forehead, I can't help but tease him a little. I mean, I was going to anyway, but that made it SOOO much sweeter! MUUAA-HA-HA-HA!
I've always wondered if maybe he wasn't scared of marriage, but he has such a reasonable, logical sounding excuse for even discussing it. Wanna hear it? He has two rules when it comes to relationships. You don't say the "love" word for at least a year, and you don't get married until you've been together for over 5 years. After 5 years, you've both been thru changes, seen each other's strengths and weaknesses, yadda, yadda, yadda.
Knowing that he had a series of step-mothers while growing up helps explain some of this, and helps me stay patient. :-) He broke his first rule with-out any pressure from me, and I had been hoping that I wouldn't have to wait another 3 years for a marriage proposal, but now that I know the thought literally makes him sweat.... LOL! Let's just say I'm not going to be holding my breathe!
By the way, the rest of our night was very nice, even though it ended way to soon. :-)
