My son, Damien, has/had sagittal craniosynostosis, which is a premature fusion of the skull and caused his head to grow elongated and not round out. He had surgery 2 days ago at Sacred Heart Medical Hospital in Spokane, which involved taking out a very large chunk of skull so that his head would grow normally. We went in at 8:00 am and they took him back about 11:00 am, and I cried. They had to wait a little longer than anticipated because they were waiting for the blood to arrive (they never start surgery without it), and so it was 2:30 before Tim and I got to go see him. He was still very sleepy from the anesthesia. He swelled up pretty big and was quite pale. Late Tuesday night, he did end up needing a blood transfusion because his blood count was down, but by the next day, his blood count was way up and he had color again. His right eye swelled shut, and his left eye was close. They gave him morphine periodically through Wednesday, and now all he needs is Tylenol. His head is extremely soft and his swelling is gradually going down. This morning before we left the hospital, he was in a really good mood, smiling, laughing and talking. He's been pretty happy since we got home. So, thank you all for your thoughts and prayers. Damiens' doing great and on the road to recovery.
