Looking for fundraiser/benefit ideas and help.

A family friend's daughter was just diagnosed with Cushing's syndrome and they are trying to take her to Virginia for treatment because her doctor here said that's the best. They are a pretty low income family and can not afford to go there so we are looking to set up a benefit or fundraiser or donation account and we don't even know where to begin. Has anyone done this before? Do you have to register with some agency so people know it's legit? What types of benefits have you had the most success with?
