Did you know...?
International Women's Day is this week!
Here is a bit of info. I put together:
ABOUT INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAYInternational Women's Day has been observed since in the early 1900's. It has been sponsored by the United Nations (UN) since 1975. Although International Women's Day is celebrated internationally each year on March 8th, it will be observed at the United Nations this year on March 6th.
The United Nations General Assembly, composed of delegates from every Member State, celebrates International Women's Day to recognize that peace and social progress require the active participation and equality of women, and to acknowledge the contribution of women to international peace and security. For the women of the world, the IWD is an occasion to review how far they have come in their struggle for equality, peace and development.
IWD is now an official holiday in Armenia, Russia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bulgaria, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Macedonia, Moldova, Mongolia, Tajikistan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan and Vietnam. The tradition sees men honoring their mothers, wives, girlfriends, colleagues, etc. with flowers and small gifts. In some countries IWD has the equivalent status of Mother's Day where children give small presents to their mothers and grandmothers.
Annually, on March 8th, thousands of events are held throughout the world to inspire women and celebrate their achievements. While there are many large-scale initiatives, a rich and diverse fabric of local activities connect women from all around the world ranging from political rallies, business conferences, government activities and networking events through to local women's craft markets, theatric performances, fashion parades and more.
The theme for 2008 is: “Investing in Women and Girls”. There are already 519 IWD events registered in 45 different countries. IWD events range from small random informal gatherings to large-scale highly organized events. All celebrate women's advancements and highlight the need for continued vigilance and action.
