Ok so I teach first grade at a pretty high performing school. It is a K-2 school that houses 9 kindergarten classes which equals 180 students!! We handed out 240 packets to kindergarten parents which meant that 60 students would be overloaded to another school. Yesterday was sibling registration and we registered 84 students which meant we had room for only 96 more students! incoming kindergarten parents have always been told get there early because it is a first come first serve basis... they have you take a number to get your packet taken care of (it's really a great system)... Apparently some of these parents took it to heart... the first person to register his new kindergartner today was in line at 10:30 LAST NIGHT!!!!! There was a group of parents that spent the night on the lawn at our school... what's next tailgating with barbecue pits!!!
So around 1:00 this afternoon I walked down to the office and people that had been sitting at school for more than 5 hours were able to register their students but told that they would be overloaded, so aparently sleeping on the front lawn of a school is the only way to get your child into our school!!
On the opposite side of town (where I live) my husband went to register my son and he was one of the only ones there, they do appts, so he just showed up at his assigned time. Less chaotic but there are also not as many kids trying to get into his school!!
My baby is starting KINDERGARTEN!!!
