We had just moved into our home 3 weeks before this happened. The baby was just 3 months old. The middle is 13 months older and then the oldest was 3. We had a yard sale & loaded up the stuff that didn't sell to take to my sister's house for her yard sale. I hooked the kids into the van, went to step backwards out of the van, lost my footing and CRACK!!! Fell on my ass and broke my right foot. My sister who was standing a few feet from me heard the break as well. So I had to drive my van 20 min to get to her house so she could jump into my van and take me and the kids to the er to get looked at. Hurt like hell to push on the accelerator!! She had her van loaded up as well and the er is 5 min from her house. So....the kids' rooms are 13 stairs, our bedroom is on the main floor, and the washer & dryer are in the basement. My hubby is working the county fair as a medic for work and a FF with the fire dept. So he is gone from early morning to late at night for 10 days. He was NOT happy when I called to tell him the news of my foot. So my mom practically moved in, she was here when DH went to work and helped around while the kids were up. She would leave when DH got home or kids went to bed. Luckily baby slept in a bassinet in my room still so that was not too bad. But nursing a 3 month old, crutches, and 2 energetic kids.....not a fun time. My mom left early one day and so I went up the stairs crutches and all to get the kids to bed, got to the top step and nearly fell backwards down them. I said never again am I doing that! Stupid move, I know but they had to get to bed somehow. I didn't know any of the neighbors yet to ask any of them for help. I was thankful it was summer and not winter that I broke my foot. I can't imagine doing crutches in the winter on the ice and snow we get here.
