HELP!!!! MY SON KEEPS CHOKING HIMSELF!!!

I need some advice.  I just got off the phone with my sons teacher.  He is in 2nd grade and has been choking himself  for no reason.  She said that he will put his hands around his neck and his face turns beat red.  THIS SCARES ME SO MUCH!!!  I don't think he realizes what he is doing to himself.  I read an article on line about some kids that did this and they died from it.   PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!!!  I am going to talk to him about it and let him know how serious this really is.  Please let me know if you have any advice.

You need to talk to your son ASAP...I too read some articles that talked about this choking thing that kids have been doing and its scary... I don't understand it but I guess its a 'high' like anything else...but you need to get him to stop somehow asap!  Don't know if your doctor would be able to explain how dangerous it was...

Mar. 12, 2008 at 12:11 PM When children begin behaving abnormally, it is always a good idea to think about what they may have recently been exposed to.  Could he have seen something on tv or in a movie or even in a cartoon?  It may not have been the exact same behavior as he is demonstrating.  It could have just been something violent.  Children are very impressionable, some more than others.  If he has just suddenly begun this, it is likely the result of some type of suggestion that he has seen somewhere.

Jun. 2, 2008 at 8:54 AM It sounds like a sensory issue.  Kids who are seeking sensory stimulation will do a lot of  "different" behaviors.  My son is seeing an OT for sensory integration and that's one of the things they talk about.
