I took the first step down the path behind the wolf, fighting the voice in my mind telling me that this was insane.  For all its impatience for me to follow, the wolf said nothing more as we traveled.  It seemed as if hours passed.  The scenery went unnoticed as I followed along behind the wolf, my mind pondering my fate.

"We will stop here for a while, child.  It is time to begin your lessons.  You have already overcome one obstacle that blocked the path of your life.  Can you tell me what that was?"

I allowed myself to once again look into the eyes of my guide, and my mind went back to the blocked path back to my camp.

"Well, my guide, if I had to hazard a guess, I'd have to say my lesson was that I cannot always follow my first instinct when meeting someone new," I said half joking.  Even as I said it, I knew this was not the answer he was looking for.  From the look in his eyes, he was not amused.

"If this is how you wish to spend the rest of your life, joking and going nowhere, then by all means, laugh away.  But I do not have time for games.  It is not why I was sent.  Tell me now, are you willing to learn?"  The seriousness of his demeanor left me speachless.  I nodded, the gravity of the moment taking hold of me.   "Now that we have that taken care of, would you like to take a second guess at the lesson you have already learned?"

"I am not entriely certain which lesson you are referring to, to tell the truth.  I have learned that there is always a second path if one is willing to look for it.  But I have also learned that you cannot always go back the way you have come.  The past is the past, and one must not dwell on it."  This time, the wolf look happy with my answer, and a little surprised.

"Good, good, child.  Well done.  You have earned your rest.  Sleep, child.  I will protect you."  I laid down, and was quickly asleep.

So, will the wolf still be there in the morning when "i" awake?

Mar. 15, 2008 at 3:31 PM Does he have to be waiting impatiently? He has to be there, because he said he'd protect you, unless he's there but not seen through the trees or something. And impatient doesn't seem quite right to me. So I chose that he'll appear when you're ready to leave, but not appear out of thin air, just like he's been there all along but unseen.
