Question: So, will the wolf read my mind and respond, or will we make it to the pack without another word?

Morning came much sooner than I had hoped. Again, the birds sang to the morning sun, as I stretched my aching muscles. As the chill breeze danced across my exposed skin, I found myself wishing I had the gear I'd left behind the following day.
This wish caused my mind to think upon the events of the day before. There was no wolf, no tracks, no sign at all of his existance. Had he truly been there? Was it all a dream? Had I eaten something that might have caused me to hallucinate? As I allowed my mind to wonder at these things, began to ready myself for another day of wandering the forest, lost and confused. Why had I even come to this god-forsaken place?
"You came to learn, of course. And, yes, I am here. I told you I would protect you. Here, eat this and let us be on our way." The wolf said as he walked from the treeline. Was he reading my thoughts? Or was I just being obvious?
As I ate the meal my guide had provided, I watched as he sniffed at the air. What was he smelling for? Was danger nearby? Would he tell me if there was? What lesson would I be learning; would I live through it?
"Child, must you always worry so? I am searching for my pack. They will help me teach you the lessons you must learn. If there were danger, I would protect you. Now, come." Though I hadn't finished my meal, I followed behind my guide without complaint. My mind still dwelling on the situation, no matter how hard I tried to quiet it.
"You know, wolf, I have yet to learn your name. If we are going to be around other wolves, shouldn't I know what to call you? That way I won't seem rude?" I don't know why it hadn't occured to me sooner that I did not know the name of my travelling companion. The wolf turned back and looked into my eyes.
"You may call me Guide. My true name is not yours to know." Though his words were said gravely, there was a twinkle in his eyes. There was something about that look that I knew from somewhere. Where that was, however, eluded me.
We traveled on in silence, occasionally stopping while Guide sniffed at the trail. Every so often, I caught him looking at me; that familiar twinkle still in his eyes, but he would turn away when our eyes met. We stopped for a meal around midday, snacking lightly on apples and bread from my pack. We ate in silence. I found myself wondering why, but could not bring myself to ask.
So, will the wolf read my mind and respond, or will we make it to the pack without another word?
Oh, and if you would like to see something happen that isn't an option, let me know :)
